The Power of a Promise

Hoyt Byrum

“But we have always done it this way.”  Some people believe that those who say these words are resistant to change.  I’m not sure.  I personally do not think people are all that resistant to change.  What they are resistant to is change that results in loss.

One year ago today, April 7, my life changed.  I lost someone of great value.  I lost the wife of one of my closest friends and one of the godliest women I have ever known.  I lost the dream of traveling together as couples, dining together, worshipping together.  She died at the age of 63.  Never should have happened.  Not fair.  Tragic.  I’ve been robbed.  Her husband has been robbed.  The world has been robbed.

Honestly, for the past 365 days I have been comforted by only one thing: the Word of God. “Fear not, for I am with you.  Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  Isaiah 41:10  I was dismayed.  I was weak.  I needed help.  God has been faithful to each of these promises.

Have you suffered loss?  Are you seeking comfort?  Memorize Isaiah 41:10 and draw upon it whenever life changes and loss is experienced.
