Power in Belief

Hoyt Byrum

There is power in our belief system. Last post I talked about entitlement as the enemy of gratitude. “I deserved better treatment.” “They owed me the promotion.” “God was supposed to keep me from getting cancer.” With these beliefs in place a person will most likely not have a spirit of gratitude.

Rational Emotive Behavior was developed by Albert Ellis in the 50’s but the basis for it is found in the Bible centuries earlier. “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2. We have very little control of the events in our lives (people didn’t treat us very well; the boss gave the promotion to another person; we did get cancer). What we do have control over is what we choose to believe about life’s events.

Next post I will write about how seeing God’s grace in all of these circumstances is not only possible but essential. The 3G Lifestyle is God’s design for experiencing joy no matter what life gives us.
